GearHealth — Privacy Policy

GearHealth helps you look after your bikes and running shoes: it counts the kilometres and hours of your rides and runs and reminds you when a component needs a service or replacing. The short version of this policy: your gear, components and service history stay on your iPhone. There is no GearHealth account. A small server helps with the Strava connection, and it stores only a Strava athlete number and your phone’s push token.
What the app stores
Your bikes and shoes, their components and reminders, their service history and wear readings, your imported rides and runs, and your settings are stored only on your device, inside the app. We cannot see any of it.
Apple Health
If you choose Apple Health as your activity source, the app asks your permission to read workouts (cycling and running) with their distance and duration. This data is read on your device, used only to count wear on your gear, and never leaves your phone: it is not sent to our server, not used for advertising or marketing, and not shared with anyone. You can withdraw access at any time in the Health app under Sharing, and the app will stop importing new workouts.
Strava
If you choose Strava as your activity source, you sign in with your own Strava account, in the Strava app or on Strava’s website. The app then fetches your bikes, shoes and activities directly from Strava to your device. Your Strava login tokens are stored on your device only.
To keep the app’s Strava credentials out of the app itself, signing in and renewing your login go through GearHealth’s server (see below). Your login tokens pass through it on their way to Strava but are not stored there.
Changing gear on Strava: if you pick a different bike or pair of shoes for an activity in GearHealth, the app changes that activity’s gear on Strava too, so both show the same. It never changes anything else on Strava, and only when you do it. Strava asks for your permission for this; you can say no and use everything else.
Disconnecting Strava in the app’s Settings removes GearHealth’s access on Strava and deletes all Strava data from the app. What Strava itself does with your data is covered by Strava’s own privacy policy.
GearHealth’s server
So that your phone can update itself soon after you upload a ride, GearHealth uses a small server, hosted by Cloudflare. When you connect Strava, it stores your Strava athlete ID (a number), your phone’s push notification token and whether it’s the App Store app or a test build, and when your phone last checked in. Nothing else: no names, activities, health data or Strava login details.
When Strava tells the server that you added, changed or deleted an activity, the server sends your phone a silent notification. It contains no data; it only wakes the app so it can sync with Strava itself. When you disconnect Strava in the app, or remove GearHealth on strava.com, the server deletes your record. As with any website, Cloudflare processes technical data such as IP addresses to run the server, covered by Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
What the app does not do
There is no analytics, no tracking, no advertising and no third-party tracking code in the app. No accounts are created, and no data is ever sold, rented or shared.
Notifications
Reminders that a component is due are created on your device and shown by iOS. Their contents never leave your phone. The silent notifications from the server (see above) are never shown and carry no content.
Deleting your data
Deleting the app removes everything it has stored, including all Health and Strava data it imported. To also remove the server’s record, disconnect Strava in the app’s Settings first, or remove GearHealth under Settings › My Apps on strava.com.
Beta testing through TestFlight
While the app is distributed as a beta through Apple’s TestFlight, Apple may provide us with crash reports and any feedback you choose to send through TestFlight. That is handled by Apple and covered by Apple’s privacy policy. It contains no Health or Strava data.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date at the top.
